SHAD UBC 2016 Programming Workshop: Installation

This workshop uses version 3.4.3 of the Python programming language.

To write and execute Python programs you also need:

  • a text editor program to edit your Python instructions
  • a command-running program to execute your Python instructions

To configure your computer to understand Python 3.4.3 instructions, download the installer for Windows or MacOS from www.python.org/downloads and run it.

Python on Windows

Windows Text Editor

On Windows, I recommend using Notepad++ as your text editor. Download its installer from https://notepad-plus-plus.org/ and run it.

Executing Python Instructions on Windows

On Windows, use the built-in Command Prompt program to execute Python instructions.

Python Installation on Windows

To check if Python 3.4.3 is installed on Windows:

  1. Run the Command Prompt program to open a window.
  2. In the window, type python -V
  3. If the response is Python 3.4.3, you're done!

Python on MacOS

MacOS Text Editor

On MacOS, use the built-in TextEdit application as your text editor.

Executing Python Instructions on MacOS

On MacOS, use the built-in Terminal application to execute Python instructions.

Python Installation on MacOS

To check if Python 3.4.3 is installed on MacOS:

  1. Run the Terminal application.
  2. In the terminal application, type python3 -V
  3. If the response is Python 3.4.3, you're done!
